Hi, I'm Jen Atkinson-Spencer, owner and florist at Sage Flowers. I was born and raised here in Kingston, other than university years in Windsor and a magical year in Monterey, California. I live in Kingston West with my husband, Steve, and our pet cat, Mr. Bingley.
I began Sage Flowers as a home-based business in January 2013 (I still remember delivering my first bouquet- gerbera and lilies for Wendy!)
In January 2015, I 'moved in' with the wonderful and talented Jane at Safari Cake Boutique. I am thrilled to greet and serve my customers from this retail location at 842 Gardiners Road. (Yes, my cake intake is now off the charts!)
My background and degree are in theatre, but in my late 20s, my gardener-grandmother's genes kicked in.
I went back to school, earned my Horticulture diploma from Kemptville College, and apprenticed in fine gardening with Dogwoods.
I had taken an intro to floral design, so I looked for part time work in a flower shop during the 2008 off-season.
After my first day I was hooked!
By summer 2012, I was working full time at the shop, handling customer service and the blog, arranging flowers, and running the place when the owner was out of town. I dreamed about opening my own studio, and when my boss put her business up for sale, it was just the kick I needed to put my dreams into action.
My little manifesto:
- to offer custom designs, instead of a photoshopped catalog licensed by giant companies.
- to focus on Ontario-grown and local flowers, and sustainably-grown imports, whenever possible
- to minimize the waste generated by the floral industry. I purchase flowers in small batches, use biodegradable or recycled packaging, and up cycle containers whenever I can. Sometimes busy holiday volume or a clients' needs will make this impossible, but I think it's important to make the effort!
It's been a wild ride so far, and I can't wait to see what happens next! Thanks to all of my customers, supporters, family, friends, brides and grooms for the opportunity to add some flower to your day!
